This lathe grinding attachment is a special design for use on a small metal lathe. It can also be used on larger full size metal lathes.
Conventional tool post grinders are too large, bulky and heavy for a small lathe. The advantage of using this design with a Foredom grinder (instead of a tool post grinder/motor) is because this set-up eliminates excessive weight, bulk, and twisting/lifting torque on the compound slide and ways of a small light lathe. Also, the ground surface finish on the part is improved because a small lathe lacks the rigidity and support needed to dampen the motor/wheel vibration of a tool post grinder.
This grinding attachment was designed for use with a Foredom Series SR grinder hand-piece. The bore size is approx. 1.011 dia. and is purposely oversized so that an aluminum shim can be wrapped around the Foredom hand-piece for protection against marring when tightened. The hole in the attachment post is sized for a 5/16\" or 8mm tool post stud. The grinder hand-piece clamp is adjustable in the vertical direction (Y axis), can be rotated to any angle relative to the Y axis direction, and can also be rotated to any angle relative to the XZ plane.
This attachment can be used for light duty thread grinding on a lathe. -Lock the angle and height in the lathe XZ plane to match the thread helix angle. (last photo)
-Lock the attachment at +30 deg.in the Y axis and dress the right side of the wheel by moving the cross slide. -Rotate the attachment to the -30 Y axis position and dress the left side of the wheel by moving the cross slide. -When both sides of the wheel are dressed, rotate and lock the attachment to the 0 deg. Y axis position.*** The secret to being able to thread grind on a small lathe is by matching the grinding wheel axis angle to the thread helix angle in the XZ plane and also have a very slow lathe spindle RPM.
Attachment materials are tool steel and 6061 aluminum except for nut, washer, and socket screws. The 1.250 dia. center post is relieved at the bottom for proper seating when tightened to the compound.
