The 187th were a two Battalion Regiment assigned to the 11th Airborne Division, they served in New Guinea and Philippines. They were a unit involved in heavy combat, taking heavy casualties and earned the name \"Rakkasans\" from the Japanese which translates loosely as \"falling umbrella.\"
