Greetings! For your consideration I offer this antique rotary valve French horn. It is made of brass, with German silver trim. It is marked \"Made by / Frank Holton & Co. / Elkhorn / Wis.\" on the bell. Serial number 112487 places the manufacture date around 1932. The Charlton Patent Valve design is extremely unusual, with collars and bearing plates (with an adjustable pivot) on the top, and odd cup-shaped covers over the mechanism on the underside, supported by three-legged \"spider\" mounts which hold a similar jeweled bearing as the upper bearing plates. The only photo I have been able to find of a similar Holton is on Horn-u-copia, HERE. I quote a short passage from the patent:

\"The jewel bearings may be accurately centered to permit sufficiently accurate fitting of the valve within its casing so that the passage of air may be controlled without actual frictional contact between the valve and its casing. The bearings of the valve spindle in their jewel seats may be made substantially frictionless when the parts are accurately adjusted so that the valve rotates practically without frictional resistance. This permits the use of more delicate springs than can be employed where frictional contact is present in the valves, and this, in turn, affords easier operation and quicker response to the operator\'s fingers.\"

The original owner\'s name and home city, \"DEWEY ALLREAD JR. / MARYSVILLE CAL\", re engraved on the bell flare. If you are a relative of the original owner, please contact me via \"Ask Seller A Question.\"

CONDITION: This horn is in poor condition, and is not playable due to missing parts. The first rotor, bearing plate, retaining collar, adjustable jeweled bearing, mechanism cover, and cover retaining nut are missing. (As these are all present on the 2nd and 3rd valves, you could copy them replacements if you are so inclined.) There is wear, patina, denting, and bend in the mouthpipe, and a hole in the bell throat where the horn was apparently drilled to be made into a lamp. See pictures.

PLAYING QUALITIES: This horn is not playable due to the missing valve parts, and is sold for parts or restoration only.

ACCESSORIES: None. You get exactly what is pictured; see pictures.
