1943 US V-Mail letter (you can see the silver in it) --- letter is to Mr. and Mrs. B. H. Haddock, Illinois Street, San Diego, California, U.S.A. --- from Corporal Benjamin H. Haddock, Battery L, 93 defensive Counter-Air (Antiaircraft), A.P.O. 959, c/o Postmaster, San Francisco, California --- A.P.O. 959 indicates that the writer is located at Wheeler Field, Oahu, Territory of Hawaii --- Passed by US 04293 Army Examiner rectangular censor\'s stamp at upper left
Letter is dated March 20, 1943, and begins, Dear Folks --- the writer says, \"I have yet to hear from a person on the mainland that even begins to understand just what the situation is among the fighting men.\" (errors in original) --- he explains, \"The very things they think they need; actually they don\'t. The period of fear or uncertainty is when you leave the Golden Gate. After that, life becomes like life anywhere else. Life is not dramatic for anyone except those at home.\"
He predicts, \"I doubt very much if Bill sees action for a long time. When he does it will frighten him, but after a while it will become a job and nothing more.\" --- he continues, \"Back at his base life will be most normal. The only thing that you do for him is to drop a line his way occasionally.\" --- he cautions, \"However, he will want to hear from[ ]those that really mean something to him. Most relaxation of the fighting men at well supplied basis is drinking.\"
He describes, \"All they are getting is 3.2 Beer, but it actually means considerable to them. When you get stuck in a hole with an unbearable sun, no women, mail at are intervals, beer once a week one can at a time, considerable nonsense is not appreciated.\" --- he clarifies, \"They want to know what is going on at home. They don\'t feel they are doing anything noble or great, but their anger swells at the cry babies that feel they are being abused by rationing, wages and such.\"
He considers, \"Ric[k]enbac[k]er reflects the general feeling of the men throughout the Pacific on that score. The only thing they really want, is to go home.\" --- he reports, \"An order came out sometime ago that men who went back for OCS then declined to attend school, would be reduced to 7th grade and sent back to the area they left, as a casual.\"
He reflects on some local controversy at home then adds, \"I have ordered an University Extension course in Journalism, and I plan to order one next month in Sociology, both from the University of Minnesota.\" --- he explains, \"We have a new officer who has a M. A. in Journalism from Missouri State and wrote from the leading paper in Oklahoma City; so I hope to have a tutor on occasions.\" --- singed, Love, Jack
