I am offering this old American Flyer Lines S gauge 302ACReading Lines 4-4-2 Atlantic steam locomotive and tender from 1948,1950-1952. No original boxes orinstructions.
I obtained this loco at sale, so I don’t know itshistory. I don’t have a layout, so Itested it on a 10’ section of track with my Lionel ZW transformer. I don’t know much about AF, so I will justtell you what I found.
TEST RESULTS:
At first the light came on, it hummed; but, it would notmove. Eventually I removed the tendershell and examined the reverse switching unit.The drum unit was not turning, so I turned it manually. The loco started to run; but, immediatelyswitched into neutral. It did thisrepeatedly. I found a lever on the sideof the switching unit that moved whenever it switched into neutral. I moved the lever down and startedpower. The loco ran forward; but, then,would not switch into neutral. Each timeI moved the lever manually, it would switch gears (F-N-R-N); but, would notchange gears automatically. It appearsthat the magnetic contact plate on the unit does not release when power isturned off. I found that a tap on top ofthe unit would release the plate.
I don’t know how to fix this unit. Hopefully, someone out there does. I guess you could lock it in forward and runit around your layout that way. There isa directional locking lever underneath the tender. Whenever the loco ran F or R, it seemed torun well.
The die-cast loco is relatively clean; but, does show somescratches. No apparent rust, breaks, ormissing pieces. The white sidewall wheelcoverings show a couple of cracks.
The plastic tender shell is on a stamped metal frame withmetal trucks and wheels. The metal partsdo show some surface rust. No apparentcracks or breaks. I’m not sure aboutmissing pieces. I saw a picture of achrome ladder on the rear – this one has a ladder cast into the shell. Looks like there could be something mountedat the top rear corners; but, pictures on the internet show nothing there. NOTE the rear coupler is not a traditional AFcoupler. It does open and close manuallyjust fine.
