I’m very excited to offer for your consideration this very elegant, VERY large 1920’s schoolhouse style pendant with an incredibly ornate etched glass shade!
This pendant totally embodies 1920s stylings, and is a visual treat! The fixture as a whole is quite charming, and would suit many different styles of decor. The deeply etched classical beaux arts design on the shade, the elegant shade holder, and the wildly overscaled size of the fixture really make this piece stand out.
The etched (not painted! not stenciled!) design, executed in a very subtle nude/beige glass against the satin white background of the rest of the shade almost completely disappears when the shade is unlit. But, as if by magic, when the light is turned on, the design jumps out of the glass and spectacularly comes to life. It’s one of the more well done large etched shades I’ve encountered. I would venture a bet that this originally hung in a large public building such as a bank or civic hall.
I have thoroughly cleaned this piece, only making some discreet touch-ups to the hardware, but otherwise leaving the finish as found. It is never a goal of mine to make a vintage fixture appear brand new - rather, to retain some subtle signs of age so that one can still tell upon close inspection that it is, well, old! The shade is in excellent condition and is free of chips and cracks, although there is some minor age spotting in places, but this disappears when lit, and will be all but unnoticeable when hung high overhead.
The chain and socket are original, while the cloth wiring and mounting hardware are new. The canopy is approximately 5 1/2 inches in diameter and will amply cover a modern electrical box. I would recommend a large, soft white 60W equivalent LED bulb in this fixture.
If you’ve been looking for something large and elegant for your foyer, vestibule or, hallway, this knockout might just be the one!
This scale of this fixture is ideal for almost any small to medium size space, measuring about 36 - inches to the bottom of the shade, and 16 - inches in diameter. I can adjust adjust the length a bit if need be, just let me know!
