Vintage Homemade Battery Charger Western Electric Gauge Copper Brass Bakelite
Really cool home built 1940s battery charger. Nice patina and great use of materials really show the chargers age well. Who ever built this piece did a great job. The housing is solid no wiggle or loose parts. I found it very interesting that the top, bottom, front, and back are Bakelite. The side panels are made out of copper mesh. Most of the hardware, screws, etc. are brass. Western Electric milliamp gauge in the front panel. The glass jewel is cracked on the gauge but the glass is not loose. The internal components all look great. The cloth covered wires are in great condition for their age. Nice heavy gauge wire power cord. The socket is missing the protective cover on the end. There is a porcelain light socket on the front panel. Im assuming this is to show when the charger is powered on. Sorry for frosted flame bulb in the photos but that is the only bulb I had on hand that would fit in the hole well enough to screw all the way in. Includes the original cable clamps but no cable.
It is not fully tested. I plugged the charger in and it appears to power up, the light bulb lights up but I did not actually charge a battery. With as good as everything looks on the inside I dont see any reason for it to not work. Not expecting anyone to purchase it to use on a regular basis. Great show piece, conversation starter. Perfect to take to car shows in your rat rod, or your 1940s hot rod. It will also fit well as a show piece in a man cave or garage.
