I’m very excited to offer this awesome, restored PAIR of early electric low-drop pendants!
This PAIR of fixtures, from thereabouts around 1900 (+ or - a few years), is in great vintage condition with a dark, heavily mottled, attractive gunmetal-like patina that brass can only acquire through decades of oxidation. I have not polished them in an effort to preserve their interesting time-acquired color, but I did give them both a thorough cleaning. There are some surface blemishes and irregularities, but this can be expected from any fixture from this era.
The sockets are original to both fixtures, and each has a nice, satisfying click when turned. They all accept a standard size household light bulb. A 60 watt incandescent or LED equivalent is recommended. The wiring and mounting hardware on both fixtures is all new. One fixture is fitted with GECO sockets, while one is fitted with Bryant sockets. This is not readily apparent, as the branding that is stamped on the paddle of each socket is only legible upon very close inspection.
I acquired these in an estate box lot of what I thought to be only parts, but after arriving at home and sorting through everything, only then did I realize I had two complete fixtures on my work bench. Score! The original internal cluster bodies, though, were rusted well beyond saving, so the internal rods and connectors are all new, and ready for another 100 years on the ceiling somewhere.
What is special about these particular kinds of lights is their inherent utilitarian styling. These were not expensive in their day, and were likely installed in a “service” area of the home they were bought for. Think, like, a kitchen, pantry, laundry, or back hallway sort of space. These were not regarded as “special” lights, and they were very commonly tossed in early renovations as tastes and technology improved in later decades. That being said, these kinds of lights are now very rare, and to find a matching pair is remarkable. The shades I have fitted these with were, similarly, inexpensive shades in their day, but are lovely nonetheless and suit the fixtures quite nicely. It took quite a bit of doing to find six matching shades! They are all free of notable chips or flaws.
Just as they were intended, I think they would look fabulous in a period sensitive kitchen, pantry, or laundry space. Perhaps at the top of a large stair landing, even. With how closely they hug the ceiling, they would work quite well in a space with only 8 foot ceilings - which is rare for most antique lighting!
These measure about 13” long, and 21” wide from shade-to-shade. I am unable to make adjustments to the length of these pieces. Their ceiling canopies measure 4 1/8” in diameter, and should cover most types of modern electrical boxes, though there are some larger modern boxes out there that might require a medallion or adaptor, depending on the circumstances of your installation. All the necessary mounting hardware is included in the sale. Light bulbs are not.
