Beautiful Mid-Century Art Deco piece of furniture here. The New Englander by Guild, stereophonic hi-fidelity stereo and phonograph player. Made of what I believe to be solid maple...even the control knobs!
What appears to everyone to be a roll top desk, turns out to be one of the coolest looking consoles ever made! The research I looked up dates this to the very early 1960s. And the stereo and turn table work!
It has a 5 speaker system...3 stacked up in the front center and one on each side with side doors you can close when not using. Now for the bad news: the front speakers are either shorted from a bad connection, or they may have to be replaced altogether. And the front material that covers the front speakers will need to be re-stretched, but there are no holes in material...it\'s in good shape. Looks like it was re-stained or touched up in places, but still no significant damage...just minor scratches that you would expect from normal wear of a 50+ year old piece of furniture.
The side speakers are perfect and really do sound amazing when you open the side doors. And the pulls are all porcelain with brass trim beneath.
This was an estate sale find that I just could not pass up. I don\'t believe repair would be very difficult or expensive, but that is my opinion. I don\'t restore the pieces I get, but rather just try to pass them along to good homes.
