\"KOKESHI DOLL\"
The \"Kokeshi\" doll is one of the most typical folk dolls in Japan
and it is very popular among us in this country. In the Tohoku district
There are six prefectures where this doll is made today.
Children in this district love this doll and are seen playing with it
carrying it on the back, dressing it in Kimonos, or even taking a hotbath
with it.
This doll is very simple and seems rather strange without the limbs as
you see but it has a charm peculiar to \"Kokeshi\" that may be said artistic.
A piece of wood is put on the turning-lathe and made into this charac-
teristic shape, a round stick of wood as its body with a little ball of
wood as its head.
Dolls similar in nature to \"Kokeshi\" are to be found in some
countries in Europe or in the island of South seas.
We cannot tell when this \"Kokeshi\" was made for the first time
but in the Tohoku district wooden articles have been made with a
turning-lathe for more than 1000 years. The older ones hadvery simple
colour decoration on the surface, but recent ones have designs like picture
in many beautiful colours. The \"Kokeshi\" is a toy, but it issometimes
offered to God by parents to keep their children safe and strong.
