Popular Science (PopSci) is an American monthly magazine carrying popular science content, that is, articles for the general reader on science and technology subjects. Popular Science has won over 58 awards, including the American Society of Magazine Editors awards for its journalistic excellence in both 2003 (for General Excellence) and 2004 (for Best Magazine Section). With roots beginning in 1872, PopSci has been translated into over 30 languages and goes out to at least 45 countries.

Popular Science Monthly was founded in May 1872 by Edward L. Youmans to disseminate scientific knowledge to the educated layman. Youmans had previously worked as an editor for the weekly Appleton\'s Journal and persuaded them to publish his new journal. Early issues were mostly reprints of English periodicals. The journal became an outlet for writings and ideas of Charles Darwin, Thomas Henry Huxley, Louis Pasteur, Henry Ward Beecher, Charles Sanders Peirce, William James, Thomas Edison, John Dewey and James McKeen Cattell. William Jay Youmans, Edward\'s brother, helped found Popular Science Monthly in 1872 and was an editor as well. He became editor-in-chief on Edward\'s death in 1887. The publisher, D. Appleton & Company, was forced for economic reasons to sell the journal in 1900.

James McKeen Cattell became the editor in 1900 and the publisher in 1901. Cattell had a background in academics and continued publishing articles for educated readers. By 1915 the readership was declining and publishing a science journal was a financial challenge. In a September 1915 editorial, Cattell related these difficulties to his readers and announced that the \"Popular Science Monthly\" name had been \"transferred\" to a group that wanted the name for a general audience magazine, a publication which fit the name better. The existing journal would continue the academic tradition as Scientific Monthly. Existing subscribers would remain subscribed under the new name. Scientific Monthly was published until 1958 when it was absorbed into Science.

The Modern Publishing Company acquired the Popular Science Monthly name. This company had purchased Electrician and Mechanic magazine in 1914 and over the next two years merged several magazines together into a science magazine for a general audience. The magazine had a series of name changes: Modern Electrics and Mechanics, Popular Electricity and Modern Mechanics, Modern Mechanics and finally World\'s Advance, before the publishers purchased the name Popular Science Monthly. The October 1915 issue was titled Popular Science Monthly and World\'s Advance.

The change in Popular Science Monthly was dramatic. The old version was a scholarly journal that had eight to ten articles in a 100 page issue. There would be ten to twenty photographs or illustrations. The new version had hundreds of short, easy to read articles with hundreds of illustrations.

Shipping and Payment information

Pay through PayPal using:

1. We accept PayPal as our only form of payment. We do not accept any other form of payment. Sorry, but no exceptions.

2. All items will be shipped within 1 business day to your PayPal address. We will only ship to your PayPal verified address, (we do not review or ship to your address, we only look at your PayPal address). While this may seem like a \"customer unfriendly\" policy, this is a fraud prevention technique and is for the consumer\'s protection, as well as ours. It is also per PayPal policy. If you do not hear from us, please assume your package went out as promised. We will only contact you if there is a problem. 3. All items are shipped by USPS first class mail. In an effort to keep our costs down, that are passed along as low prices to you, all of our disks are packaged and shipped in economic sleeves and mailers. No hard case is included. All of our disks are labeled with a clean text only label. The disks are made this way for speed and cost, which translates into lower cost for you. The disk labels do not contain fancy artwork. We focus our efforts on the quality of the material on the disk. We do not believe in charging you an extra 3 or 4 dollars like some companies out there just to throw in a 25 cent plastic case and slap a color label on an item.

4. USA CUSTOMERS: Most times, your package will arrive in about 5 days after we ship them depending on where you are at. However, lately the Post Office it seems has not been very cooperative with us and we\'ve had a couple of customers wait a few days longer than that. For that, we apologize. Please understand that we cannot control the Post Office, so we can\'t guarantee a delivery time. If the item does not arrive by the last promised ship date in , please email us and let us know, and we will make it right. The only unhappy customers we have are those that don\'t bother to contact us and don\'t give us a chance to fix the problem for them.

   NON-USA CUSTOMERS: Same deal above, except your packages typically have been taking about 2 weeks or so after we ship them. We\'ve noticed that maybe 20% of overseas customers have been waiting as long as 4+ weeks for these shipments. The only explanation we can come up with is that it must be stuck in some container in some dock waiting on customs clearance. It happens, and for those 20% of customers, we apologize, but there is very little we can do about that. Your disk will arrive or we will replace it.

5. Multiple items purchased by the same customer may or may not be shipped in the same package, at our discretion. We do not offer any additional discounts on multiple items other than the ones noted above.

6. Every effort has been made to accurately describe the contents of this collection. On very very rare occasions, typographical errors may occur and we may make an innocent mistake. These items are described to the very best of our abilities, and in as much detail as possible.
