I think these lathe tools from the last century are called \"toothing irons.\" The serrated, tooth design on the top made them effective for turning work when knots were encountered, but are also suitable for other hard materials. I believe Wellman and Freeman were selling them, and I recall seeing handles that allowed them to be interchangeable, but I used them without problem minus the handles. I got both the long and short tools from old-time pattern makers who served their apprenticeships in the 1930s. Note that the long tools are initialed with \"V\". The long tools are 3/4\" wide while the short ones are 1\" wide.
