“The airplane stays up because it doesn't have the time to fall.”

-Orville Wright

THE WRIGHT BROTHERS

Wilbur and Orville Wright were American inventors and pioneers of aviation. The Wright brothers achieved the first powered, sustained and controlled airplane flight; they surpassed their own milestone two years later when they built and flew the first fully practical airplane.

On December 17, 1903, two brothers from Dayton, Ohio, with no formal engineering training defied gravity in their curious flying machine over the dunes of North Carolina’s remote Outer Banks. By making what many consider the first powered, sustained and controlled manned airplane flights, Orville and Wilbur Wright ushered in the era of flight and soared into the history books. Thanks to a coin toss, Orville was the first brother airborne and three days later, Orville, in coat and tie, lay flat on his stomach on the plane’s lower wing and took the controls.

At 10:35 a.m., the Wright Flyer moved down the guiding rail with Wilbur running alongside to balance the delicate machine. For 12 seconds, the aircraft left the ground before touching down 120 feet away in the soft sands. The brothers exchanged turns at the controls three more times that day, and each flight covered an increasing distance with Wilbur’s final flight lasting nearly a minute and covering a distance of 852 feet.

“Once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward,

or there you have been, and there you will always long to return.” - Charles Lindbergh

Charles Lindbergh

Charles Augustus Lindbergh(February 4, 1902 – August 26,1974) was an American aviator, military officer, author, inventor, and activist. On May 20–21, 1927, Lindbergh made the first nonstop flight fromNew York City to Paris, a distance of 3,600 miles (5,800km), flying alone for 33.5 hours. His aircraft, the Spirit of St. Louis, was designed and built specifically to compete for the Orteig Prizefor the first flight between the two cities. Although not the first transatlantic flight it was the first solo transatlantic flight, the first nonstop transatlantic flight between two major city hubs, and the longest by over 1,900 miles. It is known as one of the most consequential flights in recorded history and ushered in a new era of air transportation between all parts of the globe.

“You do what you can for as long as you can, and when you finally can't, you do the next best thing.

You back up but you don't give up.” - Chuck Yeager

CHUCK YEAGER

On October 14, 1947, U. S. Air Force Captain Charles E. “Chuck” Yeager became the first human to fly faster than the speed of sound, piloting the experimental Bell X-1 at Mach 1 at an altitude of 45,000 ft (13,700 m). He then went on to break several other speed and altitude records.

The airplane was named “Glamorous Glennis” in tribute to his wife, Glennis Yeager. The aircraft has been on display at the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, D. C.

In 1973, Yeager was inducted into the National Aviation Hall of Fame, arguably aviation's highest honor. In December 1975, the U. S. Congress awarded Yeager a silver medal equivalent to a non combat Medal of Honor for contributing immeasurably to aerospace science by risking his life in piloting the X-1 research airplane faster than the speed of sound.

“Looking at the earth from afar you realize it is too small for conflict and

just big enough for co-operation.” - Yuri Gagarin

YURI GAGARIN

Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin (9 March 1934 – 27 March 1968) was a Soviet pilot and cosmonautwho became the first human to journey into outer space. Traveling in the Vostok 1capsule, Gagarin completed one orbit of Earth on 12 April 1961. By achieving this major milestone in the Space Racehe became a national hero of the Soviet Union and the Eastern Block and an international celebrity. Yuri Gagarin was awarded many medals and titles, including being awarded by Nikita Khrushchev the title of Hero of the Soviet Union, his nation's highest honor.

Vostok 1 was Yuri Gagarin's only spaceflight, but he served as the backup crew to theSoyuz 1 mission, which ended in a fatal crash, killing his friend and fellow cosmonaut Vladimir Komarov. Fearful that a national hero might be killed, Soviet officials banned Gagarin from further spaceflights. After completing training at the Zhukovsky Air Force Engineering Academyin February 1968, he was again allowed to fly regular aircraft. Gagarin died five weeks later when theMiG-15 training jet he was piloting with his flight instructor crashed.

“That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”

-Neil Armstrong

NEIL ARMSTRONG

Neil Armstrong Mission Commander of Apollo 11 spaceflight that landed the first two humans on the Moon and became the first human to step on the Moon six hours after landing the lunar module Eagle on July 20,1969 at 20:18 UTC. Pilot Buzz Aldrin joined him about 20 minutes later. They spent about two and a quarter hours together outside the spacecraft, and collected 47.5 pounds (21.5kg) of lunar material to bring back to Earth. Michael Collins piloted the command module Columbia alone in lunar orbit while they were on the Moon's surface.

On July 20,1969 at 3:17 EST and only 66 years after the first successful flight in history, Neil Armstrong Mission Commander of Apollo 11 spaceflight carried with him an extraordinary piece of aeronautics history: a tiny piece of wood from the propeller of the Wright Flyer and a scrap of fabric from its wing. Neil Armstrong became the first human to set foot on the moon.
