WWI US Army Wooden Machine Gun Ammo BoxM1917/Push Button Latch
This is an originalearly version without the bottompanel and gun-side panel of the box shortened to avoid contact with the mount.
Original, flat olive drab paint alongwith the bottom of the interior of the box was stenciled with the orientationof the ammunition. Some of the wooden ammo boxes were stenciled outside with\"CHEST 49-1-84\".
The M1917 .30 Cal. Browning machine gunwas developed for the U.S. military during World War I, ammunition was packedin wooden boxes for direct feeding of the gun.
This box is made of oak or ash wood,dovetail or lap joints, a leather strap on top fitted into a rectangular groovewith a centered circular pick-up area, works on an open-lid feed, has a spring-loadedlid latch to gun-side panel, and end hinge. There is a slot in the gun-sidepanel for a firm attachment to the gun.
