Offered here is a circa 1910 Chimayo, New Mexico
weaving that measures 20” x 18” and is in very good condition. It was handwoven by an expert weaver on a
horizontal shuttle loom of all 4-ply Germantown wool yarns on a wool warp. This is a nice antique Chimayo sampler with a
central Chimayo diamond star medallion on the wine red field. Bold compound stripes decorate each end
field. .
We obtained this vintage Mexican American textile on
a rug hunt in Arizona just to offer you here on . It has a smooth, even weft count averaging 26
per inch and a fine warp count of 10 per inch.
The selvages are all in very good condition. Warp selvages are warp knot finished and
weft selvages are natural weft loop finished around the outside warp. Two corners are tight & excellent and 2
are good with very small damaged places.
It has not been cleaned, is pretty clean now & comes from a
non-smoking home. There are a couple of
tiny moth bites and a small area of light spots in the red 3/8” to ¼” in
size. Three warp knots are loose. Both sides are even in pattern color and
shown in photos above. Colors are
excellent in this piece of old American Indian art and they are: natural
blended grey, very light grey & off white along with aniline light gold,
black and wine red. This example of New
Mexican Americana is ready to head your way.
