I've owned various flavors of Weller soldering irons for all of the last 40 years or so. This is my current favorite due to size, versatility, ease of maintenance, and technological sophistication. Having the temp sensor INSIDE the tip is, one way or another, the best place for it, and allows a high degree of temperature control in real time. Most of the newer generation of pencils and bases use a 5 wire approach - 2 for power, 2 for temp sense, and 1 for earth ground. That Weller chooses to use a different plug pattern for the pencils and bases of various models makes me angry at being abused as a consumer of their products. They will probably have a 'reasonable' story to explain why that was necessary, but my contention is that if they had spent just a reasonable amount of engineering time on the issue, we would be able to plug any of a variety of pencils into any of a variety of different bases. Marketing forces can be infuriating. That said, choosing this pencil and it's accompanying base will allow you to have a high quality soldering instrument with a VERY selection of tips for just about any soldering task. I have one myself and am totally content with all aspects of its behavior, even while being seriously pissed off at Weller marketing.Read full review

Iron works fine for a few years, then handle softens/deforms and then the heating element slides out from the plastic handle. This one was my replacement. Design flaw. I kept the old unit as a backup for parts.

Like all Weller products I've used, This is great! Heats fast and maintains heat well. Light weight and very easy to handle with good cable length.

My old soldering pencil was damaged after years of use. The new OEM WELLER PES51 Replacement Soldering Pencil brought my old WELLER WESD51 base unit back to Life: It solders like a New Station again!

The Weller pes51 iron works very well. It heats up quickly and keeps an even temperature. I replaced mine (that I purchased used) and finally gave up the ghost. Other irons I've used degraded pretty quickly but my Weller has lasted quite a long time. I feel this was well worth the cost of the replacement iron.
