I used this kit to turn a 55 gallon drum into a maple sap evaporator. It worked great. Just be careful how far back you put the back legs because you need to reach the screw and nut at the same time. I also left the 2” bung intact so I can let in more air at the bottom. It’s still not really enough to keep a hot burn going but would be fine if I was using the stove for heat. When I finished the first burn I just shut the 2” hole (get a black pipe plug at the hardware store) and left it overnight in the yard. It was still warm to the touch with plenty of coals to relight.

It was easy to install and set up. The quality isn’t bad especially for the price. My barrel stove seems to be very efficient at a fraction of the price for a real wood stove. For a work shop, garage, or a similar type area I would definitely recommend.

Everyone who depends on heat in the winter, should have at least 1 of these stoves put together. I used a similar stove for over 15 years until my church/domicile was Burned Down in Clyde, Texas - no sense looking that up though - even though they Know who did it - it Never even hit the news, but I got through the coldest of winters with one of these! I do want to give you a head's up here - when you use a steel drum - you want to put around an inch or 3 of sand in the bottom of it - and when you take the coals & ash out - just don't dig out your sand. The reason for this - is that Without it - your steel drum will rust/burn out WAY FASTER, than putting in an inch or 3 of sand - plus, it cuts way down on the heat towards the floor... so I guess you can say this kit is probably the best overall investment for the one who wants to stay warm in the winter by the cheapest and most convenient way! I had to buy a second barrel to get the top of the barrel. I found the grates from a derelict barbecue grill. I bought the sand to line the bottom of the barrel (for heat protection for the floor). I used the louvers from the grill to create air flow andI purchased the stovepipe locally. Its summer so I have not used the unit yet, but I have no doubt that it will work beautifully.

I used a good condition barrel, whacked out the openings with a jig saw. Mounted the legs, set it on end, cut and installed door, set it upright and cut the chimney hole, bolted the collar on, used HD black steel chimney, topped it with a spark arrester. Piece of cake ! Fun ! And it works terrific !! Thanks !
