About this product

Product Information

Compassionate, bracingly indignant, and keenly detailed, a monumental work that provides an essential framework for assessing the vitality of all cities. "The most refreshing, provacative, stimulating and exciting study of this [great problem] which I have seen. It fairly crackles with bright honesty and common sense." -- The New York Times A direct and fundamentally optimistic indictment of the short-sightedness and intellectual arrogance that has characterized much of urban planning in this century, The Death and Life of Great American Cities has, since its first publication in 1961, become the standard against which all endeavors in that field are measured. In prose of outstanding immediacy, Jane Jacobs writes about what makes streets safe or unsafe; about what constitutes a neighborhood, and what function it serves within the larger organism of the city; about why some neighborhoods remain impoverished while others regenerate themselves. She writes about the salutary role of funeral parlors and tenement windows, the dangers of too much development money and too little diversity.

  • Keep the focus in planning

I bought the book three weeks ago and was immediately impressed with ideas available on this inexpensive book. It has community security concepts, sidewalks highlights, and more. The book is perfect for expose arguments. My only complaint is that the book don't have color pictures and multimedia cds. This author could do a better job with the help of recent book tecnologies. Overall, I'd recommend this book if you are interested in planning, security, city issues and life.

  • Insightful book

This book shows why Jane Jacobs has been such an influential figure in how we understand cities, or at least should understand them. While the urban planning field has absorbed some of her lessons, many don't have the deep and nuanced vision that she does, and some lessons are lost almost completely. This book is an engaging way to learn them and an engaging read which speaks to her talent an observer and a writer.

  • Jane Jacobs is more valid now than ever

In the 1960's, Jane Jacobs was a good little house wife living in what was then a very run down East Village. Then she encountered Robert Mosher, the NYC Tsar of remodeling NYC. Robert had a master plan that amounted to replacing Geenwich Vilage with a parking lot. Her carefully crafted arguments championing the community led to this book. Today, I use her example to push for sustainable development in Newark, NJ.

  • Urban Planner's Bible

If you are studying urban planning and have already read some of the latest books then this is the book for you. Jane Jacobs was the first to understand what it has taken the rest of the planning field 50 years to understand. If you like Andres Duany or Jeff Speck's ideas then this book is for you. Jane Jacobs was the first to understand the work that these two rock stars of planning have been elaborating on since the late 70's to now.
