Maybe it is just some of the "Realist David White" Instruments do not have a lock on the horizontal circle scale. This one did not and I could not even find a hole for the lock. I, with my fumble fingers, need that lock. The optics, bubbles, and smoothness of operation on this old instrument appeared good to excellent.

Easy and quick to set up and use. This is the best current optical transit on the market for builders and landscapers. It reads to 1/12 of a degree. 5 minutes of angle. 5 inches in 100 yards. With careful use it will level to an inch in that distance. It has an accurate bubble on the scope and accurate pivots. The rotation axis has accurate sealed double row ball bearings for smooth accurate work. The view through the scope is clear and bright with clear cross hairs. It is a good solid full size transit that you don't have to apologize for. It is fully manually operated. No batteries needed. And has nothing to go out of adjustment that you can't see. The DW 8-300 is probably the best choice for a first or backup or only surveying instrument on the market today. New or used. Read full review
