They don't make 'em like they used to - smooth and sweet operating calculator!
HP 48 SX/DX calculators are the absolute best ever produced. The newer HP50 series has a much more cumbersome - cheesier - keyboard. I've compared going from the legacy calculators to the new ones as transitioning from a Lamborghini to a Yugo - the user interface on the older units is that much better. This particular unit is from the very earliest days of the 48SX - to the point that it was actually made in the USA (how long has it been since any consumer electronics were USA made?). The unit looks and works like it came from the factory this morning! Truly, they don't make 'em like this anymore! HP 48 SX/DX calculators are the absolute best ever produced. Outstanding calculator for RPN fans!
There is so much already written about the HP 48 series of calculators that I won't repeat it here. You can do a search for HP48 and get more info than you'll need about these machines. One very important fact about the HP calculators is that they live on in the Apple iTunes store! You can get perfect emulations of these RPN calculators and load them onto your iPhone or iPod Touch. Even if you don't have an Apple product they are even available for the new Android devices being brought out this year (2010) I have six of the popular HP calculators on my iPod Touch and can easily switch to the one I need in a second. These apps run exactly like the real calculators, but much faster and some have even been enhanced to offer designs and features that are better than the originals. I paid ... These are the next best thing to having a computer in your pocket.

I have been using HP calculators with RPN for many years. About 30 years back one of my professors (teaching electrical power engineering) indicated that if we students WERE NOT using HP RPN calculators we were at a disadvantage in his course. I had just purchase a top-of-the-line non-RPN calculator, but not wanting to be at a disadvantage in speed and performance in his course I immediately purchased an HP RPN version. It was a especially good move and I have thoroughly enjoyed RPN since then. At the present time I am preparing to initiate my grandkids with RPN calculators. I was very pleased with my purchase of the HP 48SX calculator. I have used one of these calculator for the past 25 years. The device was never designed to last as long as it has. Depending on how it was used and stored it many still work today and preform flawlessly. It is a calculator that works just like a calculator should. This has been the preferred calculator of engineers because of its ease of use and flexibility.I was very pleased with my purchase of the HP 48SX calculator.
