Volume One and Volume Two bound together

Two volumes bound together. Written by John George Zimmerman. Published by Verner and Hood, J. Cathell (and 8 others). Volume One is dated 1800 and has 7 engravings by Ridley. Volume Two is dated 1803 and states “Third Edition” on the title page. This volume has 4 engravings by Ridley.

William Ridley (1764-1838) was an English artist renowned for his stipple engravings. He engraved over 400 portraits after various artists and worked as an illustrator for a variety of magazines.

John George Zimmerman was born in 1828 in Brugg, Switzerland. He attended the University of Berne, studying philosophy and belles lettres (literature). He then studied medicine at the University of Gottingen, graduating in 1751. He soon married and became Physician to the town of Brugg. In 1768 he was appointedto the post of principal Physician to the King of Great Britain at Hanover. He soon suffered the death of his wife and daughter, and his son fell victim to a psychological disorder that left him insane. In time, Zimmerman married a woman 30 years his junior, proficient in English and Italian, able to revise and edit his compositions and who was to restore him to his former good humor. It was in this period that Zimmerman closed his great work on Solitude. Publishing the first two volumes in 1784 and the remaining two in 1786. He died after suffering a long illness in 1795.

first edition hardcover with book is in very good condition with some restoration. It is in the original contemporary leather binding which was severely worn with a crumbling spine. The book has been rebound and recased into its original cover. The leather binding has had new leather corners applied and the boards reattached to a new leather spine. What was left of the old spine has been laid back on the new leather. The textblock has been rebound into the cover using new cotton cloth spine reinforcing and linen cords. The original endpapers have been retained with the hinges reinforced with similar paper. The back of the front endpaper and the next blank front endpaper have extensive penciled notes. There is an old inked gift inscription and date on the first title page. There are a few pages with light penciled notations. All of the engravings and tissue guards are present, although most show various levels of foxing.
