1853 1st US Grinnell Expedition in Search of Sir John Franklin, A Personal Narrative. Eliza Kent Kane, Harper & Brothers, NY.Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition, first printing. Rare book. Complete with all pages, all maps, all illustration plates and tissue guards. Leather bound with marbled papers matching end papers and page edges. Gilt stamped spine with past on leather title.Previous owners name in pencil on front blank page dated 1854, there are no owner marks or writing on any other pages. Most pages are free of foxing, but the full page illustration plates have some foxing and the tissue guards are browned with some offsetting to opposite pages.This work chronicles the first Grinnell Expedition to discover what happened to Sir John Franklin who set out on his own Polar expedition in 1847. This American expedition was headed by Lt. Edwin DeHaven, and Dr. Elisha Kent Hunt Kane (1820-1857) would serve as chief medical officer. Kane would actually lead the second Grinnell Expedition, and authored the present work . Unfortunately, Franklin was already dead by the time these expeditions went looking for him, but in both cases these expeditions faced many signficant challenges of their own.The book measures approximately 9\" x 6\" and has 552 pages, 14 full-page engraved illustrations on heavy stock with many other illustrations throughout, folded map in wonderful condition, please see pictures.
