1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition was a major World’s Fair that was held in St. Louis, Missouri. As part of the World’s Fair, the 1904 Summer Olympics were also held in St. Louis. Several medals were produced in connection with the 1904 World’s Fair. This is one of the so-called Exhibition Palace Dollars from the Louisiana Purchase Exposition featuring the Palace of Machinery and the Palace of Mines and Metallurgy which is listed as HK-320 in the Hibler-Kappen book on So-Called Dollars and has been graded MS64DPL by NGC. The obverse features a detailed rendition of the Palace of Machinery with notes that it was 525 by 1000 feet and cost $497,000. The reverse is a detailed rendition of the Palace of Mines and Metallurgy with notes that it was 525 by 750 feet and cost $500,000. This piece is bright white and very lustrous. The piece also has strong prooflike mirrored fields with frosty devices. The open prooflike fields do show some light handling marks, but no major issues. Only two (2) examples of the HK-320 have been graded finer by NGC; a single MS65DPL and a single MS67DPL specimen. A wonderful high-grade example of this so-called dollar from the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair.
