HK-302, 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition Official Medal, Yellow Bronze, Circ For Sale

Official Medal of the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis, MO. There is some dispute over the terminology used to accurately describe the planchet compositions used for this issue. Hibler & Kappen originally separately listed Copper, Bronze and Yellow Bronze as HK-301/303/302 respectively. Modern research indicates that all of these compositions are essentially the same, and pieces cannot be so carefully distinguished. These were struck on site, and planchet stock was re-melted and reused daily, resulting in a mixed bag of composition, the color varying widely from a very red \"copper\" to a yellow \"brass\" depending upon impurities and the degree of Zinc and whiter metals included. In this case as this is a somewhat worn \"pocket piece\", I think I can safely call this HK302, Yellow Bronze. However, the planchet stock appears to be what metallurgically would normally be considered Brass. An inexpensive example which actually served the intended purpose as a true souvenir. 0418-05
