Mid-19th Century Wood 1 Key Historic Piccolo Unbranded :
$365.00

This is a mid-19th century one-keyed orchestral piccolo. I thought for years that it was a fife, but couldn’t figure out why it didn’t match with any period in history where fifes were used - not Revolutionary, not Civil War - but has been in my family for three generations, reportedly owned by my great-grandfather, passed to my grandfather, then on to my aunt who was the grandfather’s step-daughter, who gave it to me in the early 1960s. The tenon joint was originally wrapped with red thread which I replaced with cork. If desired, the cork could be cleanly removed and the tenon re-wrapped with thread as it was originally. Unfortunately, there is a hairline crack in the head joint. I’ve been told this could be professionally repaired if desired. The piccolo plays. Please note: Very motivated to sell this piccolo - will consider all offers.
You can search online for “The Flute Examiner” and find “anonymous one-keyed piccolo” on their site. There is one virtually identical to the one here for sale that you can view read additional information.
Background:Anonymous one-keyed piccolo

The one-keyed piccolo had the same range and pitch as the fife. The separation of fife and piccolo began with the addition of a key and changes to the bore. Although there are one-keyed fifes, it is the combination of changes that delineate the instruments. Eighteenth century texts mention the development of a one-keyed piccolo with better intonation as a fife alternative. The French were the first to develop the one-keyed piccolo, although there is debate over which maker first introduced the concept. French opera scores of that period often called for these instruments. The one-keyed piccolo appeared in Germany around 1750, but not in England until around 1800.
