* Gilbert & Sullivan * -- NOTE from www research and / or Wikipedia:
Gilbert and Sullivan refers to the Victorian era partnership of librettist W. S. Gilbert (1836–1911) and
composer Arthur Sullivan (1842–1900). Together, they wrote fourteen comic operas
between 1871 and 1896,of which H.M.S. Pinafore, The Pirates of Penzance, Ruddigore, Trial by Jury,
Patience, and The Mikado are among the best known.
The Dave Cheadle Card Store lists numerous 1800's cards referencing these plays. Many G & S productions parody elements of the Aesthetic Movement and the absurdities of
aestheticism and the extravagance, conformity, ironies and hypocrisies of 19th Century Victorian culture.
Aesthetic Movement: - This card also reflects a general late-19th century American infatuation with
"Oriental" art and culture. Especially under the influence of the Aesthetic Movement
(fueled by Oscar Wilde's lecture tour of America in 1882), Americans flocked to purchase and collect
Chinese and Japanese imported (or imitated) "Fancy Goods" of all types.
Wilde, the so-call "Apostle of Beauty," inspired art for art's sake. At a time when America was rapidly
transitioning from a rural society to a more sophisticated urban/industrial culture, tokens from
the Far East became a litmus test for cultural "sophistication." Teas and imported bric-a-brac in the
forms of everything from paper fans, parasols, and hanging lanterns to exotic bamboo screens and
elephant bronzes were scattered about middle-class homes to instantly (and superficially)
suggest a residence of "refined taste."
