Original1853 antique lithographed map: Preliminary Sketch ofPungoteague Creek, Virginia. - This map is drawn on a scaleof 1:40,000 from a trigonometric survey by Lieutenants B.F. Sands andJ.J. Almy, U.S. Navy.
- Details include soundings, bottom conditions,navigational aids, and two proposed sites for a lighthouse, in theshallowsjust to the west of the mouth of Butcher\'s Creek in Assomack County on Virginia\'s Eastern Shore.
- The lighthouse was constructed and commissioned in 1854,the year after this map was drawn. It wasdestroyed by an ice floe in 1856 — the shortest recorded existence ofany lighthouse on Chesapeake Bay, at just 459 days.
- Other labeled features on the map include the steamboatwharf on the south shore of Pungoteague Creek,South Marsh Island, and Nandua Creek.
- The map was published in a report by Alexander DallasBache,Superintendent of the U.S. Coast Survey. It is dated 1853.
- The image area measures 23 x 26.6 cm[8¼\" x 10½\"].
- Condition: This map is in excellentcondition,bright and clean, with a faint vertical fold, as issued, and nomarks, rips, or tears. It is printed on alightweight paper, typical of mid-19th centurygovernment fold-outs, and it isblank on the back, with no printing on the reverse side.
