This is anoriginal graphite drawing on paper by American artist Jerry De La Cruz (b 1948,Denver, CO). The work is a horizontal format, 10” high by 8” wide. The paper isthick, 100% rag and the work is already professionally matted in white museumboard to a framing size of 14.5” high by 12” wide.
The subject is awaist-high period male portrait. The work is aptly titled “Highlander I” andthe young gentleman appears to be just that, a Scottish youth from days gone by.He has long hair with thick sideburns that flow right through a bold mustache,leaving his chin clean shaven. He wears a simple white smock with a littleclasp closing in front. He faces the viewer but looks off to his right. Thiswork is in pristine condition and signed front lower right the artist. De LaCruz has been a full-time professional fine artist since 1975. He was thesubject of a museum-wide retrospective at Denver\'s Museo de las Americas in2015-2016. He is listed among the three dozen most influential regional artistsof the twentieth century in a Denver Post survey of regional curators andproved the bestselling artist at the first International Latino Art sale inPhoenix, AZ. The Denver Art Museum\'s first purchase of a living Hispanic\'s workfor its permanent collection was a De La Cruz. Years later, he was the onlyartist considered when that same museum wanted to commission a major,contemporary digital work commemorating the opening of its new LibeskindBuilding. De La Cruz was the recipient of back-to-back artist-in-residencygrants from Colorado in his early career and received as well their very lastpainting fellowship.
