This lovely hand carved old stone figure is of the Longgui, a mythical beast of ancient China that combines two of the celestial creatures--a fierce dragon and turtle. With length of 9\" and height of 7\", it weighs a hefty 9.2 lbs! The stone is similar to Grade C jadeite, but I believe it to be marble or similar very hard, heavy stone. This dramatic carving was likely made in the late 19th C or very early 1900\'s. It is in excellent shape but will benefit from a good cleaning and a polish.
The auspicious Longgui is said to hold secrets of both heaven and Earth, and represents power, success, support, longevity, fertility, and most of all, courage. There are 5 small turtles climbing on its back in this carving, and the shell is part of the sculpture and does not lift off.
Shipping is a little more on this piece due to its weight and need to double box.
