This is a cast replica tail spike from the Jurassic thyreophoran dinosaur, Stegosaurus stenops. The original was found in the Morrison formation of Wyoming. Position on the body would have been the sides of the tail near the tip .
Stegosaurus was a herbivorous ornithischian ( bird hipped) dinosaur that lived during the Jurassic period. The tail spikes of Stegosaurus were exaggerated osteoderms, or scutes. The exact function of the spikes was a defensive weapon against predators like Allosaurus.
