Here we have a hardback book that measures 8.75\" x 5.75\" and has 219 pages. I did a little web browsing to learn a bit about Meriel Buchanan (1886-1959). I\'ve sold several of her books and this is the last one of hers I have. Her father was an English diplomat and her childhood was spent in Europe accompanying her mother and father with his various postings. In 1910 the family were posted to St. Petersburg, Russia and saw firsthand the growing World War and Russian revolution. In 1917 she worked as a nurse caring for the wounded soldiers. The family left Russia in 1918 during the revolution. The author began publishing stories around the outbreak of WWI, then turned to nonfiction about the events of the growing revolution. She continued writing after returning to England. Her father retired diplomatic service in disfavor, with is support of the White Russian when while English diplomats were supporting the Reds. Meriel augmented the family income with her publishing--mostly about the people and events while in Russia. This was especially necessary after her father\'s death when she became the primary breadwinner for herself and her mother. Victorian Gallerywas written (1956) quite late in the author\'s life. In the prologue she says, \"Some of the men and women in this book were royal, some were rich and beautiful, some were humbly born, but they all knew Europe before the lights went out, and if they were here now, I think they would find this modern age, with its frustrations, its petty difficulties, and its drabness, a poor substitute for the world they knew.\"

Condition: I note from other listings that this book is missing a dust jacket. Even without this protection, it is in quite good condition. The pages are free of rips, writing, stains or folds. The binding is tight and there are no loose or missing pages. The covers do show a little staining, the spine shows some fading, and the spine and corner edges show a bit of wear. Please see the pix and judge its condition for yourself.

I\'m slowly starting to part with some of my history/biography (mostly royalty) of England, Russia and some European countries from the period 2nd half of the 19th century thru the Russian Revolution. I got more taken with the period, than with the book I thought I would write. Now that I am in down-sizing mode, a lot of these books must go. So, if this period (and it does cover a lot of ground) is of interest to you, please check back with me in the weeks (and probably months) to come. Many of the books that I bought were used and not expensive, so I\'ll be bundling a lot of them in order not to be at this forever.

Shipping will be via USPS Media Mail. THIS BOOK WILL BE BOXED FOR SHIPPING.

Thanks for checking out my listing.
