Cast iron Nellis Hay Harpoon. Painted red. Patented in 1873 by Aaron Nellis. Hay harpoons were used in the late 1800\'s and early 1900\'s to lift hay into the hay mow. They were attached to the fork pulley ( drop pulley ) and locked into a hay trolley. The trolley was positioned over the hay and the fork pulley was released from the trolley with the harpoon attached. It buried itself in the loose hay and the blades near the point opened up and the hay was then lifted by horses using the trolley.35 1/2\" long (including handle)Approximately 4 3/4\" loop on handle (diameter).Spear is approximately 2\" wideWeighs 11.2 lbs
