Bing Cosby co-owned the Del Mar Race Track which opened in 1937. On opening day of the Del Mar track, Bing Cosby was there greeting the first fans to come through the gates and providing autographs to those lucky few. The phrase " Where the Surf meets the Turf " was coined as the racetrack slogan. It was a frequent gathering spot for movie stars and their entourage.
The racetrack gained notoriety from the August 12, 1938 race between the legendary horse, Sea Biscuit and the Argentine bred horse, Ligaroti. The 5th race on that day featured Sea Biscuit and Ligaroti. Bing owned Ligaroti and the horse was the favorite for the race.
The race was a $25,000 winner take all prize. Sea Biscuit was the little horse that could, an underdog that upset the racing world on that famous day. It was the race that put the Del Mar track into the history books, bringing national attention. It was the first race to be broadcast coast to coast by NBC. Everyone loved Sea Biscuit and the rest is history.
