Unlike later book illustrations, this was issued during Scott's lifetime at the beginning of the Civil War while he was still General-in-Chief of the Union Army. Decorative patriotic portraits from 1861 remain highly collectible because they combine Civil War history with elaborate nineteenth-century engraving and are ideal for framing.
