A distinctive and highly appealing 1876 United States Centennial Exposition medal, attributed as Julian J-CM-11, struck in white metal and measuring approximately 58 mm.
This large Centennial medal commemorates the 100th anniversary of American independence, 1776–1876, with elaborate allegorical designs and extensive peripheral legends.
What sets this example apart is the beautifully executed hand-engraved presentation inscription on the reverse:
“From Annie to Jennie”
“Providence, R.I.”
The inscription is arranged in ornate flowing script around the central figure, giving the medal a strong period presentation character and making it far more personal and unusual than a standard example. The bright engraving stands out dramatically against the deep charcoal-gray surfaces.
The medal retains excellent overall design definition, with strong detail visible throughout the figures, lettering, shield, wheel, drapery, rays, and surrounding devices. The dark gray coloration gives the piece an especially striking antique appearance.
