HistoryThe Indian Head cent replaced the Flying Eagle cent, the minting of which proved difficult due to the unsuccessful design of the obverse and reverse. This type has several varieties. The obverse depicts the head of a woman with European features wearing an Indian headdress, symbolizing Liberty. According to the engraver James Longacre, his model was one of the ancient statues of Venus. The word \"LIBERTY\" is engraved on the ribbon holding the feathers, and the circular legend reads \"UNITED STATES OF AMERICA\". The edge of the coin is smooth.
In 1859, the reverse of the coin depicted a wreath of olive branches, in the center of which was the denomination \"ONE CENT\".
From 1860, the design of the reverse was changed. The wreath of olive branches was replaced with an oak wreath, with a small laurel branch and three arrows woven into its lower part. A shield with 13 vertical stripes also appeared, symbolizing the strength and unity of the state, which was very relevant during the Civil War.
In 1864, the copper-nickel composition of the coin changed. The coin began to be minted from 95% copper, with the remaining 5% of the alloy consisting of tin and zinc. At the same time, the weight of the coin was reduced from 4.67 to 3.11 g.
The coin was issued for a very long time – until 1909.
