1888-P Seated Liberty Silver Dime - NGC AU55 - Attractive Choice AU, Close to Mint State! Nice Strike & Bright Eye Appeal!
From one of the longest-running designs in U.S. silver coinage history. The Seated Liberty series for the dime ran from 1837 to 1891.The late 1880s fell during the era of the Bland-Allison Act of 1878, which required the Treasury to purchase large quantities of silver each month and coin it primarily into Morgan dollars. This policy absorbed much of the Mint’s silver capacity and at times constrained production of subsidiary denominations (dimes, quarters, half dollars).
1888 itself was an election year in which Republican Benjamin Harrison defeated incumbent Democrat Grover Cleveland. The broader economic backdrop was the high Gilded Age: rapid industrialization, railroad expansion, rising immigration, and continued sectional and monetary tensions that would soon produce the Sherman Silver Purchase Act of 1890. The Washington Monument was completed and dedicated that year, and women’s suffrage activism (including organizing by Susan B. Anthony) continued.
Within three years the Seated Liberty design would be retired. Mint Director Edward O. Leech, with the support of the Harrison administration, used the opportunity presented by the 25-year rule to commission new designs from Chief Engraver Charles E. Barber. The Barber dime (along with matching quarter and half dollar) entered production in 1892, ending the Seated Liberty era.
