A Classic example of one of the most iconic coins in American numismatics, part of the Morgan Dollar series minted by the United States from 1878 to 1904 (with a brief revival in 1921). The Morgan Dollar\'s imagery has endured as a symbol of the Gilded Age, reflecting America\'s industrial growth, westward expansion, and debates over monetary policy.
Designed by British engraver George T. Morgan, who was an assistant engraver at the U.S. Mint, the series was created in response to the Bland-Allison Act of 1878. This legislation required the Treasury to purchase large quantities of silver each month to produce dollar coins, primarily to support the silver mining industry in the western U.S. amid economic pressures from the \"Free Silver\" movement.
Obverse: Features a left-facing profile portrait of Lady Liberty, symbolizing freedom and the ideals of the young American republic. Morgan modeled this after Anna Willess Williams, a Philadelphia schoolteacher, whom he described as having the \"most perfect profile\" he had seen in America or England. Liberty is depicted with flowing, curly hair cascading down her neck, adorned with a Phrygian cap (a soft, conical cap symbolizing liberty and emancipation from slavery, inspired by ancient Roman freed slaves). Tucked into the cap and her hair are elements representing American agriculture: ears of wheat (for fertility and abundance), cotton bolls (nodding to the Southern economy), and oak leaves (for strength and endurance).
Reverse: Showcases a heraldic bald eagle, the national bird of the United States, with its wings outstretched in a display of power and vigilance. The eagle clutches an olive branch in its right talon (symbolizing peace) and a bundle of three arrows in its left (representing defense and war readiness). This duality echoes America\'s commitment to peace but preparedness for conflict.
