Stephen\'s Day, 1899. The book is arranged in short numbered chapters grouped by evangelist, opening with the sources from which the evangelists drew their information, the guidance of the Holy Spirit and the individuality of each writer. It then works through S. Matthew (authorship of the First Gospel, Jewish features, the estimate of dreams, fulfilment of Messianic prophecy, the kingdom of Christ\'s Church), S. Mark (the author of the Second Gospel, his graphic style, S. Peter\'s influence, the humanity of Jesus Christ), S. Luke (authorship, medical phraseology, the exaltation of womanhood, the woman that was a sinner, revelations of the unseen world) and S. John (his account of our Lord\'s ministry at Jerusalem, the discourse on Eucharistic doctrine, absolution, and Christ\'s self-revelation).
