Saco, Montana (Historical Overview)Saco is a small town in northeastern Montana in present-day Phillips County. The community was established along the Great Northern Railway\'s transcontinental line during the period when northern Montana was being opened to settlement and agricultural development. The railroad was the primary catalyst for the town\'s creation, as it established stations and shipping points across the Hi-Line to serve ranchers, farmers, and merchants. The town was founded in the early twentieth century and quickly became a regional trading center for the surrounding prairie country. Grain farming, cattle ranching, and railroad commerce formed the basis of the local economy. During the homestead boom of the 1900s and 1910s, Saco experienced rapid growth as settlers arrived to claim agricultural lands in northern Montana. The origin of the town\'s name is generally attributed to the naming practices of Great Northern Railway officials. One tradition holds that it was named after Saco, Maine, while another local explanation suggests it derived from a shortening of Sacajawea.By the early 1900s, Saco had become an important shipping point for wheat and livestock. Businesses serving homesteaders, ranchers, and railroad workers appeared along the town\'s main street, and the community developed schools, churches, grain elevators, and mercantile establishments typical of Montana\'s prairie towns.Today, Saco remains one of the historic communities of Montana\'s Hi-Line region and reflects the agricultural and railroad heritage that shaped much of northern Montana during the settlement era.
