Saco, Montana (Historical Overview)Saco is a small town in northeastern Montana in present-day Phillips County. The community was established along the Great Northern Railway\'s transcontinental line during the period when northern Montana was being opened to settlement and agricultural development. The railroad was the primary catalyst for the town\'s creation, as it established stations and shipping points across the Hi-Line to serve ranchers, farmers, and merchants.The town was founded in the early twentieth century and quickly became a regional trading center for the surrounding prairie country. Grain farming, cattle ranching, and railroad commerce formed the basis of the local economy. *Bateman - Switzer Company was a very successful wholesale dealer in wines, liquors, cigars, bar glassware, and manufactured their own cider, soda, and ginger ale. David Wellington Bateman led a sort of cowboy-ish lifestyle and moved around frequently. David met capitalist Jacob Switzer and in 1890 began their venture at 206 Central Avenue in Great Falls, Montana with Switzer acting as a silent partner and Bateman running the day to day operations.
