Offered here is a 1909-O Barber Dime, graded Very Good (VG). Struck at the historic New Orleans Mint, this issue has special significance as the final dime produced by the New Orleans Mint, which ceased coinage operations in 1909.

Designed by U.S. Mint Chief Engraver Charles E. Barber, the obverse features Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap and laurel wreath, surrounded by UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, with the 1909 date below. The reverse displays ONE DIME within an agricultural wreath, with the “O” mintmark identifying production at New Orleans.

The New Orleans Mint struck 2,287,000 Barber Dimes in 1909. The coin was produced in the traditional U.S. alloy of 90% silver and 10% copper, with an original weight of approximately 2.50 grams and about 0.0723 troy ounce of actual silver weight.

Beyond its place in the Barber series, the 1909-O marks the end of an era in American coinage. The New Orleans Mint struck its last coins on April 1, 1909, making this one of the final issues associated with the historic Louisiana facility.
