Three works in one volume: a full dictionary of the French language, a section of Latin and foreign phrases printed on distinctive pink paper, and a substantial history and geography encyclopedia covering people, places, battles, paintings, operas and empires.What sets it apart is the illustration. Nearly 6,000 wood engravings run through the text, everything from bees and abat-jour lampshades to yaks, zebras, daguerreotypes and early typewriters. Each letter opens with a decorated capital crowded with scenes and objects. There are full-page plates of fish, human anatomy, the flora and fauna of Africa and Asia, and a famous colour plate of edible and poisonous mushrooms that is still framed and hung today. The maps show a world that no longer exists: the Ottoman Empire spanning the Balkans, Imperial Russia running from Saint Petersburg to the Caucasus.Larousse plates from this period are widely sought after by collectors and decorators, and complete volumes in full leather with gilt edges are far less common than the standard publisher\'s cloth.
