John Watson Davis illustrated Alice\'s Adventures in Wonderland in the early 1900s, with editions around 1920 featuring his distinctive COLOR PLATES. His work was published in the U.S., often alongside the classic black-and-white illustrations of John Tenniel, and is considered SCARCE AND COLLECTIBLE today.
🖌️ John Watson Davis and Alice in Wonderland
Early 1900s editions: Davis illustrated Alice\'s Adventures in Wonderland around 1920, making him one of the earliest American illustrators of the book.
Color plates: His edition included vivid color plates, which contrasted with Tenniel\'s original black-and-white engravings.
Publisher: This notable edition was published by A.L. Burt in the U.S., in the 1920s, combining Tenniel\'s illustrations with Davis\'s color work.
Collectibility: Copies of Davis\'s illustrated editions are considered rare and valuable, especially first editions with intact plates.
Timeline placement: Davis\'s work fits into the broader timeline of Alice illustrators, coming after Peter Newell (1902) and Maria Kirk (1904), and just before the explosion of illustrators in 1907 like Arthur Rackham and Charles Robinson.
📚 Why Davis\'s Illustrations Matter
Distinctive style: His color plates gave Alice a fresh, American flavor compared to Tenniel\'s Victorian engravings.
Transitional role: Davis bridged the gap between Tenniel\'s canonical imagery and the wave of illustrators who reimagined Alice in the early 20th century.
Collector\'s appeal: Because relatively few copies survive in fine condition, Davis\'s editions are highly sought after by collectors of Alice ephemera.
ABOUT THE FEATURED ARTIST
JOHN WATSON DAVIS had a career for six decades as an illustrator; in
addition to his religious commissions, his drawings appeared in Zane Grey
novels, in editions of Sherlock Holmes tales and Bluebeard, and in other
books and magazines. His father was John Steeple Davis, also a book
illustrator. Born in New York, Davis moved with his family to Paris when he
was ten years old, where he received his art training. This was a time when
many artists from North America and elsewhere flocked to Paris, then the pre-
eminent city for the visual arts, to study with masters in schools that
emphasized rendering of the human form.Davis returned to Brooklyn when he was in his twenties, and began his
commercial artist career. To avoid confusion with other artists named \"John W.
Davis,\" he began signing his work \"J. Watson Davis.\" He married Agnes
Danforth, with whom he had four children; they subsequently moved to Hollis,
New York.
