A singular Denver Mint issue from the final year of the Morgan dollar series, this 1921-D Morgan Silver Dollar is certified PCGS MS64 and offers strong historic appeal as the only Morgan dollar ever struck at Denver.
The obverse features George T. Morgan’s classic Liberty portrait facing left, wearing a Phrygian cap, cotton bolls, and wheat leaves, with the word LIBERTY inscribed on the diadem. Around the border are E PLURIBUS UNUM, thirteen stars, and the date 1921. The reverse displays the heraldic eagle with wings outstretched, clutching arrows and an olive branch within a laurel wreath, with IN GOD WE TRUST above and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and ONE DOLLAR around the periphery. The Denver “D” mintmark appears below the wreath, a defining feature of this one-year Morgan dollar mintmark issue.
Graded MS64 by PCGS, this example displays bright silver-white surfaces with lively mint frost and satiny luster across both sides. The strike is pleasing for the issue, showing respectable definition through Liberty’s hair, cap detail, and the eagle’s wing feathers, especially considering the shallow-relief dies used for the 1921 coinage. Light, scattered contact marks are consistent with the assigned grade, while the overall eye appeal remains fresh, attractive, and well suited for a high-quality Morgan dollar collection.
The year 1921 marked the final production of the Morgan silver dollar, a series whose origins are closely associated with the great Western silver discoveries, including Nevada’s famed Comstock Lode. After a long hiatus following the 1904 coinage, the Morgan dollar returned for one last year before being replaced by the Peace dollar later in 1921. The 1921-D is especially important as the only Denver Mint Morgan dollar, adding a distinct place in any mintmark set alongside Philadelphia, Carson City, New Orleans, and San Francisco issues.
Although the 1921-D had a substantial mintage of 20,345,000 pieces, certified Choice Mint State examples remain consistently sought after because of the coin’s unique Denver Mint status and its role as a final-year type issue. PCGS reports 8,322 examples in MS64 with 3,774 graded higher, underscoring that while obtainable, this grade represents a desirable balance of quality, availability, and value for the advanced collector.
