1941 The Lazarette Frank Swinarski NAPA Cleveland Amateur Press First Issue For Sale

Original first issue of a small-format National Amateur Press Association publication by Frank Swinarski, “Skipper and Pilot,” 1538 East 70th Street, Cleveland, Ohio. The subtitle is “Nautical, but not naughty.” The tan cover has a bold black sailboat illustration and ornamental borders.

Photographed page 2 states that The Lazarette was “launched upon the sea of amateur journalism” as a new publication and identifies its NAPA affiliation. Its welcome invites amateurs to Cleveland for the July 4, 5, and 6 NAPA convention and says the committee was planning the program. The maritime title, subtitle, and “Skipper and Pilot” credit form an extended nautical theme.

The Fossils records Swinarski among Lone Scouts who entered amateur journalism. The National Library of New Zealand\'s Robert G. Barr collection identifies him as one of the printers of The Immobile Finger for the 1945 NAPA convention in Cleveland. No exact match was located. A related 1941 NAPA amateur-press journal sold for $79.95. The newly documented first-issue status, named publisher, NAPA affiliation, Cleveland convention content, and pictorial cover support a $129.95 fixed-price test.

Approximately 5.25 x 3 inches. Moderate age toning and browning, small dark specks and stray marks, light surface soil or rubbing, minor edge and corner wear, and visible center-fold or binding wear. Cover and photographed page 2 remain legible. Three supplied photographs are included: two cover views and one interior view. The interior photograph is partly obscured along the lower edge by another object.
