1942 P Jefferson Nickel T2 Silver NGC MS67+ Pop Condition Rarity, Lustrous!NGC graded 8,140 of these type 2 1942P nickels as of this posting. Would you believe 2,392 are MS67?!? (not so rare) But, move into MS67+ and there are only 84 without FS designation (and 31 with FS). Add another 43 across both designations in MS68 or better.
That means there are less than 2% of these nickels grading ms67+ or better! Would you believe there are more MS67FB nickels (142!) than there are MS67+ examples? (and both sell for around the same typically)
Moving on to this coin... it's a wholesome, attractive specimen of the first year of issue for "wartime nickels". This type 2 (T2), silver variety of the Philadelphia minting for this year is bright and clean while showing off the unique, highly reflective metallic texture of this silver alloy.
Great strike: sharp hair for Jefferson and crisp Monticello details with FS being thwarted by a couple diagonal marks and a small weak area.
The field around "MONTICELLO" and "FIVE CENTS" contains turquoise, and violet toning, which can also be found whisping across the viewer's left side of Monticello and into a small powder blue toning haze just above the left side of the porch. Could that etheral toning continue to spread?
