A fantastic example of Rasht embroidery - It has a bold design with sharp colors and extremely fine silk embroidery on felted wool. It is backed in beige cotton at two ends and a printed (probably Russian market) print in the center. Accordingly to the Metropolitan Museum: “Traditionally, the chain stich was used in much Persian embroidery. The Caspian city of Rasht was known to have supplied the Safavid Court at Ardebil and excelled at the art, hence Rasht embroidery developed into a unique craft. Executed by male professional embroiderers in well-organized workshops, the panels were characterized by the use of felted flannel wool for the ground. The designs were pounced with powdered chalk, and chain stitched in firmly twisted colored silks using metal crochet hooks. The outer borders were often patched bands of different colors (like this example), elaborately worked in a riot of colors.”
This is a beautiful example of this art and it is in excellent condition - apparently haven been hung - it is a bit dusty.. We find one 2” rip in the lining, as pictured.
