Medal - Portrait of Napoleon Bonaparte (Emperor Napoleon I), France
Artist: Bertrand Andrieu (1761-1822)
On the obverse side, we have a bust portrait of Napoleon Bonaparte with the text: "Napoleon" and "Emperor". Under the shoulder of the figure we see that it is signed "Andrieu F." for "Andrieu Fecit"
On the reverse side, an attached piece of paper reads:"In this spirited performance Andrieu has delineated Napoleon after the manner of the Roman Emperors, the laureated profile being a striking resemblance of its original at the period of his nuptials with the Archduchess Maria Louisa, solemnized on the 2nd of April, 1810. Bonaparte having repudiated Josephine, dispatched the Prince of Neufchatel to Vienna, to demand the hand of the Emperor of Austria's daughter; and on the 27th of December Napoleon announced to the Senate that a contract had been entered into for that purpose. Great expedition was resorted to upon that occasion; as, soon after the Ambassador's arrival at Vienna, the usual ceremony took place, when the Arehduke Charles officiated as proxy for Napoleon."
The medal is encased in a domed glass front frame. The medallion in frame weighs 90g (about 3.1 oz), and measure 2 7/8" in width. The medallion itself is about 69mm in width (about 2.7").
According to Museums Victoria in Australia, which has a similar one in their collection, it was produced by electroforming, a glass covered electrotype. This allows for the creation of a highly detailed medal as you can see in my various photos.
