19th Century Primitive Treen Hand Made Pine Wood Caddy w/Carrying Handle For Sale

This 19th century (1800-1899) primitive treen hand-made pine wood caddy with a carrying handle is a unique piece of rustic primitive antiquity. Crafted by a farm hand somewhere in North America here in the United States, this nice size caddy features a simple yet functional design that reflects the style of the era. Made from solid pine wood in a natural pine wood grain, this original piece showcases the craftsmanship of a bygone era. An era when tools were hand fashioned by a blacksmith as precision machinery and carpentry didn\'t exist at least until the 20th century during and after the Industrial Revolution. The advent of industrial automation where precision hand tools & power tools took the place of hand fashioned tools make this caddy a valuable addition to any primitive antique collection.

During the middle and end of the nineteenth century farming was a way of life for peoples living in rural America as they supplied food to people in larger metropolitan areas like Chicago, New York, and San Francisco. Farmers had larger families of up to twelve children and if most were girls a farm family would take in a farm hand looking for a place to rest his head and get paid for his hard work. Farmhands were oftentimes tasked with making useful essentials like the solid pine wood caddy most likely used for hand tools like a hammer & nails and other hand forged tools of the era. This type of hand-fashioned woodworking is called treen where useful objects were created by hand without the use of precision tools. And treen has become highly collectible as many pieces have not survived decades after they were made until today as many were discarded and newer more refined objects took their place.

The caddy in this listing is made from solid pine wood, has a carved out carrying handle on top, has five compartments; two equal sized larger ones on one side and three equal sized ones on the other side of it. The entire piece was coated with linseed oil a natural varnish made from the linseed tree. The nails used to join the pieces of the box together are flat headed nails invented in the 1820\'s & 1830\'s as well making this caddy a genuine, authentic, piece of 19th century primitive antique treen.

Today collecting primitive antiques & collectibles is past time for many people as collectors share their rustic primitive appearance. Besides being a useful 19th century tool caddy, I have shown in my pictures above another use for it as a fruit basket and besides this it would do well as a flatware caddy, a wine storage caddy, a flowerpot caddy in the mud room for potting plants, and more.
