Pair of Antique Horology Books by F. J. Garrard – 1908 & 1914
A very interesting pair of early 20th-century practical books on watch and clock repair and making, both by F. J. Garrard and published by Crosby Lockwood & Son, London.
1. Watch Repairing, Cleaning, and Adjusting – F. J. Garrard, 1908Second Edition, Revised
A practical handbook dealing with the materials and tools used, and the methods of repairing, cleaning, altering and adjusting all kinds of English and foreign watches, repeaters, chronographs and marine chronometers.
The title page states that the book contains over 200 illustrations specially drawn and engraved for the work.
Published by Crosby Lockwood and Son, London, 1908.
2. Clock Repairing and Making – F. J. Garrard, 1914
A practical handbook dealing with the tools, materials and methods used in cleaning and repairing all kinds of English and foreign timepieces, striking and chiming clocks, and the making of English clocks.
The title page states that the book contains 120 original illustrations.
Published by Crosby Lockwood and Son, London, 1914.
Condition
Both books are original antique hardback volumes dating from the early 1900s.
The green cloth bindings are generally attractive and intact, although there is noticeable rubbing and wear to the edges and corners, particularly along the lower edges. There are also some minor marks consistent with age and use.
The pages shown are clean and in surprisingly good condition for books over 100 years old, although there may be age-related browning, foxing or other minor imperfections elsewhere in the books.
Please examine all photographs carefully as they form an important part of the description.
A particularly interesting pair for collectors of antique horological literature, clockmakers, watchmakers, restorers and enthusiasts of early 20th-century clock and watch repair.
